With almost 100 accredited pharmacy schools in the United States, potential pharmacy students have many options. How do you narrow down your choices to a manageable few pharmacy education possibilities? The following pharmacy school rankings may help you with your choices, as thier rankings, combined with other information, might help you find a school that will meet your specific needs. You also can find rankings in publications such as the Annals of Pharmacotherapy.

U.S. News Pharmacy School Rankings 2008

Methodology: U.S. News examined the data for each quality indicator and adjusted the indicators in which low values suggest higher quality, such as acceptance rates. They then standardized the value of each indicator about its mean. The weights applied to the indicators reflect their judgment about relative importance, as determined in consultation with experts in each field. Every school's performance is presented relative to the other schools with which it is being compared. A school with an overall score of 100 did not necessarily top out on every indicator; rather, it accumulated the highest composite score.

PhDs.org Pharmacy School Rankings

Methodology: Unlike other ranking systems, PhDs.org does not use a fixed set of criteria and weights for computing rankings. Instead, you choose a set of criteria of interest and indicate how important each criterion is to you. They then use your weights to rank a set of programs according to your priorities. Data on the site come from a number of outside sources, including: Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), National Research Council (NRC), Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) and Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates in Science and Engineering (GSPD). The National Science Foundation, the National Research Council, and the Department of Education collected the data.

NIH Research Funding

Methodology: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) rankings are based solely upon the total amount of research grant money allocated to pharmaceutical schools. Grants from NIH fund numerous areas of study; including research projects, postdoctoral/predoctoral research and fellowships. The guidelines for NIH grants are complex and vary depending upon the type of award desired; to investigate research opportunities at your chosen schools, it is best to contact them individually.
