More on Music

Rarely do any of the major school ranking publications mention music as a category within their lists. Newsweek listed Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York as one of their "25 Hottest schools," and the Paul Green School of Rock site allows users to find music schools through a search engine. Otherwise, the only way to rank a music school to date is through the Student Review list below. This list is based solely upon student surveys.

Students Review: Music School Rankings

Methodology: Student review ranks their listings through student surveys. 5,000 valid surveys were analyzed statistically, and a Gaussian matrix was created to model the survey patterns within and between surveys. A resulting filter, correlation matrix, and survey model is applied uniformly to all surveys, and this results in an average of student opinion ratings minus "variability of score." The 'variability' function decreases exponentially with the size of the sample set, applied equally to all institutions, making it an acceptably fair accounting form.

PhDs.org Music Rankings

Methodology: The National Science Foundation, the National Research Council, and the Department of Education collected data from a number of outside sources, including: Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), National Research Council (NRC), Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) and Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates in Science and Engineering (GSPD). Unlike other ranking systems, PhDs.org does not use a fixed set of criteria and weights for computing rankings. Instead, you choose a set of criteria of interest and indicate how important each criterion is to you. They then use your weights to rank a set of programs according to your priorities.
