More on IT & Computer Programming

If you want to study technical sciences, your choice of college might depend upon the type of degree you want to pursue, the skills you hope to obtain and the money you wish to make. While you may want to pursue a Ph.D. at a school ranked by U.S. News, you may want the "coolness" factor of attending a school ranked by PC Magazine or you may want to attend a school abroad. The rankings listed below can help refine your search, and they're all based upon different criteria.

U.S. News Top Computer Sciences Programs 2009

Methodology: This year, U.S. News updated their Ph.D. rankings computer science programs, mathematics, and physics to correct a problem with 2006's survey that left some programs off the survey instrument. In addition to these new rankings, they republished older rankings based solely on peer ratings in various graduate level Ph.D. programs in sciences. Every school's performance is presented relative to the other schools with which it is being compared. A school with an overall score of 100 did not necessarily top out on every indicator; rather, it accumulated the highest composite score.

PC Magazine Top Wired Colleges 2009

Methodology: To rank America's Top Wired Colleges, The Princeton Review's data collection team reached out to institutional and administrative contacts at the schools featured in the 2009 edition of The Princeton Review's "The Best 368 Colleges." These contacts completed a brief online survey designed by The Princeton Review and PC Magazine, covering all aspects of technology and connectivity on their campuses. After collecting the surveys, PC Magazine looked at each school's responses. Eighteen of the survey questions were grouped into categories of academics, student resources, tech support, and infrastructure. Each question was assigned a point value and weighting, and each of the overall categories was assigned a weighting to come up with the twenty schools. You can view their 2007 rankings (developed in 2006), which used the same methodology.

THE - QS World University Rankings 2008: Technology

Methodology: This list represents the world's top universities in engineering & IT based on responses to an academic peer review. The Academic Peer Review is the centerpiece of the Times Higher - QS World University Rankings carrying a weighting of 40 percent. The results are based on the responses to a survey distributed worldwide both to previous respondents and subscribers to two key databases: The World Scientific, from which 180,000 email addresses are drawn and the International Book Information Service (IBIS) a service from Mardev. In 2008, the questions respondents are asked regarding universities inside their own country and outside were separated. These are recombined after the responses are in using methods designed to reduce any response bias by country.

Digital Community Colleges Survey 2008

Methodology: The top 10 tech-savvy community colleges for 2007 have been named by the Center for Digital Education and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). A ranking was established based on their third national Digital Community Colleges Survey, which examined how colleges are deploying technology to streamline operations and better serve students, faculty and staff. Schools were placed in three categories based on size of enrollment, with college officials providing information from the 2007 school year. At the survey's conclusion, the top 10 in each of the three categories were named. You can peruse previous surveys from the same page, all built using the same methodology.

PhDs.org Computer Science Rankings

Methodology: The National Science Foundation, the National Research Council, and the Department of Education collected the data for the rankings on this site. Unlike other ranking systems, PhDs.org does not use a fixed set of criteria and weights for computing rankings. Instead, you choose a set of criteria of interest and indicate how important each criterion is to you. They then use your weights to rank a set of programs according to your priorities. Data on the site come from a number of outside sources, including: Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), National Research Council (NRC), Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) and Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates in Science and Engineering (GSPD).
