More on Engineering

Engineering degrees vary widely, but they all are consistent in the basic courses. Beyond this, the student can enter aerodynamic engineering, civic engineering, programs in metallurgical and materials engineering and more. The rankings below, combined with your knowledge of what you want to study and where you'd like to attend school, may help you with your decisions. Methodologies range widely from the sophisticated to simple student surveys.

U.S. News Engineering 2009

Methodology: Rankings for 192 schools that provided the data needed were calculated based on a weighted average of the 10 indicators listed here: quality assessment, student selectivity, faculty resources and research activity. Specialty rankings were out of 55 schools, and were based solely on assessments by department heads in each specialty area. Department heads in their specialty area rated the other schools that offered a doctoral degree in the specialty on a 5-point scale. Those schools with the highest average scores appear here. Names of department heads and the names of their respective engineering schools came from the American Society for Engineering Education.

StudentsReview: Top Engineering Schools

Methodology: Ranking was determined with the following factors: educational quality, academic success, creativity encouragement, useful work, faculty accessibility and university funding use. Out of 7,500 undergraduate student surveys, a total of 5,000 valid surveys were analyzed statistically, and a gaussian matrix was created to model the survey patterns within and between surveys. Rank is computed by multiplying the importance of each variable selected by that variable and adding together. The average of all matching surveys for a particular school is then taken.

PhDs.org Civil Engineering Rankings

Methodology: Unlike other ranking systems, PhDs.org does not use a fixed set of criteria and weights for computing rankings. Instead, you choose a set of criteria of interest and indicate how important each criterion is to you. They then use your weights to rank a set of programs according to your priorities. The National Science Foundation, the National Research Council, and the Department of Education collected data from a number of outside sources, including: Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), National Research Council (NRC), Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) and Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates in Science and Engineering (GSPD) for this list of master's and doctoral nursing programs. You also might search for related engineering programs that range from aerospace to petroleum engineering.
