More on Art & Design

More interest has been paid to art and design schools within the past few years as CEOs highlight the growing role that creativity plays in supplying managers to corporate and nonprofit organizations. Schools that teach design thinking, with its emphasis on maximizing possibilities rather than managing for efficiency, are in high demand. Architects, interactive Web designers, illustrators, textile designers and more have found a new niche in corporate settings. The following rankings were produced to highlight art and design schools throughout the U.S. and the world. Methodologies among these rankings range widely.

US News & World Report 2009

Methodology: The master of fine arts program rankings were based solely on the results of a peer assessment survey. Respondents were asked to rate the academic quality of programs on a scale of 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding). Scores for each school were totaled and divided by the number of respondents who rated that school. The response rate was 39 percent. Surveys were conducted by Synovate. The lists of schools, individuals surveyed at each school, and specialty concentrations were developed in cooperation with the Department of Art and Visual Technology at the College of Visual and Performing Arts at George Mason University in Virginia. The specialty fine arts rankings were based solely on ratings by educators at peer schools.

BusinessWeek's 60 Best Design Schools in the World 2007

Methodology: The Second Annual BusinessWeek survey of the best design schools highlights the growing role they play in supplying creative managers to corporate and nonprofit organizations. Their list includes joint programs among business, engineering, and design schools as well as revamped curricula within traditional design programs. BusinessWeek turned to a panel of innovation consultants, design academics, and corporate executives to select programs that have curricula they respect and whose graduates they hire. They then conducted interviews with professors, students, and alumni to narrow down recommendations to a list of the top global 60. These programs needed to show design combined with business, engineering or marketing as an essential element in the mix. You also can view this list as a slide show.

StudentsReview: Top Creative Schools

Methodology: Out of 7,500 undergraduate student surveys, 483 surveys were rendered invalid. Inspection of the invalid surveys revealed a failure rate of five percent. Rank is computed by multiplying the importance of each variable selected by that variable and adding them together. The average of all matching surveys for a particular school is then taken. From this, a 'variability' is computed based upon the number of surveys. If there is only one survey, and it ranks a school at a 10, one more survey ranked at '0' would give the school average a 5 (10/(1+1) = 5). The 'variability' function decreases exponentially with the size of the sample set, applied equally to all institutions, "making it an acceptably fair accounting form." This is an ongoing monthly survey.
